CIICA UPDATE: 9 OCTOBER 2022
MORE RESOURCES AND DATA FOR YOU
LEARNING FROM YOUNG PEOPLE WITH CI
INSPIRING EACH OTHER TO ADVOCACY听

“This has really made me think how I听can inspire other young poeple听to speak out.”

Our inspiring session on the opportunities and challenges for young people, led by听Bowen Tang, CI User, and President of the International Federation of Hard of Hearing Young People,听gave young CI users from around the globe the opportunity to share their experiences about the challenges and opportunities at home, school, higher education and work and look to the future.

How do they manage their听cognitive load? How do you manage the boss? What changes do they听want in the technology and their services for the future?听 How do they advocate?
Thanks to all those who were inspired to join us after the event- send us your news!
Have a look at听听for the presentations; pdfs and captioned videos available. DO USE THEM!

Euro Trak Reports
Low Awareness of CI in Germany and France; data for advocacy听
Euro Trak reports, established听by EHIMA听to survey countries about hearing aid useage and awareness, have recently included useful questions on CI awareness.
Have a look at the reports on Germany and France and听see how little awareness there is even there of cochlear implantation. For example in Germany:听
69% of the population in Germany have never heard of Cochlear Implants.
Only 18% of the HA owners with severe/profound HL have been informed about CIs by a medical professional.
This is unacceptable – Go to 听 for the detail and use it in your advocacy work!听

RESOURCES FOR TEACHERS OF THE DEAF MANAGING LISTENING EFFORT

Helen Willis, in our Young People’s CIICA LIVE event, spoke about Listening and Cognitive Effort and what听we know from neuroscience to help manage this.
The British Association of Teachers of the Deaf provide a number of helpful resources on their website and among these are some from Helen: if you go to听听 you will find many resources which are useful in school and for parents. If you go to听听听you will find two resources from Helen: one for children and one for adults.

Going for Gold: a resource to empower deaf children听 (adults) with cochlear implants to manage listening effort.听

IFHOH WORLD CONGRESS IN BUDAPEST
A WORLD WITHOUT BARRIERS
CIICA WAS THERE!

After 12 years as President, Ruth Warick of Canada handed over the Presidency to Avi Blau of Israel, during IFHOH’s exciting World Congress in Budapest.听听Dr Shelly Chadha, leader of the great Ear and Hearing Care initiatives at WHO, inspired us from the start of the Congress about why it is so important that we all advocate for better services globally for those with听hearing loss. The figures are stark:

“430 Million need hearing services
only 17% have access to interventions. “

Dr Chadha urged us to听Raise Demand and Improve Supply听

At the meeting Dr Adam Kosa with听Ruth Warick and Avi Blau听launched the听Budapest Declaration听recognising Auracast, the new Blue Tooth Techology with its Implications for Hard of Hearing Persons. IFHOH’s new policy on CI was also launched, an important moment.
